No Domain Names Over?$50k? REALLY??

In our last episode (TRAFFIC NY), our auction protagonists (to some) decided to set a cap on the highest priced domains in the auction at $100k. This was both strategic and a realization of the purchasing trends of the time.

In this new episode (TRAFFIC Down Under), we find that our villains (to some) made no such decree this time and yet somehow the resulting inventory contains no names with starting reserves over $50,000? Why?

For several reasons, first off, the downturn. As expected, economic depressions bring sellers closer to buyers and their needs - buyers whose assets are also diminished and closely-held.

Thus, the simple truth is we found far better DEALS in the lower ranges than we found in the upper echelon. This is the effect of a marketplace in flux and, as always, this produces the best buying opportunities.

And we know this because the list includes many names that would have listed eighteen or twenty-four months ago for three to four times as much and likely sold in that dissimilar environment too. Now many have “No Reserve.”

NO Reserve Domains
Normally I cringe at the words “No Reserve” as I get a mental image of useless domains without keywords, branding, SEO, resale or even registration fee value.

But as Dylan reminds - “times they are a-changin” and the zero-reserve landscape is truly altered by top buys like SafariAdventure.com, BirthstoneJewelry.com, LandDownUnder.com, ChildLocation.com, AntiItch.com, GourmetStores.com, BusinessFirms.com, CheckoutLane.com, Stealin.com, PrivateResort.com and countless more starting at everyone’s favorite price.

In the end, we chose fifty domains we feel turn the ?no reserve? mentality on its ear -including some amazing .com.au domains.

One of the single best surprises of the auction is the astounding collection of premium .com.au domains listed for sale - at incredible prices.

Many of them, including gems like Camp.com.au, Broadcasting.com.au, Up.com.au, Hunting.com.au, Toons.com.au and more, are listed at NO Reserve! WTF? This is the single best ccTLD opportunity we’ve seen to date - by far, mates.

Somehow.com $3,500.00 Terrific single word domain that could apply to dozens of industries but could work for research, fitness, therapy and more. Positive word that sells ’solutions’.
Sello.com $4,000.00 Spanish domains, which continue to grow in resale value and traffic, rarely get this solid at this price. This is Spanish for ‘Stamp’ so it serves as product specific generic and/or brandable generic.
AccentTables.com $5,000.00 Product specific home decor items like this are a rarity. Netshops or CSNstores owns most of them and have developed businesses on them. Perfect for an ecommerce development
DigitalVideos.com $5,000.00 Begs for development and monetization or even speculation as ‘digital videos’ covers many areas beyond just YouTube into production, software, promotion and more.
DownloadIt.com $5,000.00 Quality ‘download’ names don’t surface anymore (ever!), much less ones this good at this discounted price. Highly consistent, competitive and profitable term.

BroadcastingSchool.com $6,000.00 Highly specific education domain covering a sought-after and competitive field - lots of programs and advertisers cover this one.
Carpenters.net $6,722.00 Rare single-word premium generic for large and needed service-area. Tons of SEO value.
Courtdate.com $7,000.00 One of the finest and most recognizable legal phrases - even its implication signifies immediate need for legal services. Huge potential buyer pool.
2o.com $8,500.00 Don’t remember the last time we saw a brandable two-letter domain. How many are there even? 2o.com is killer at this price. Build an entire company around it - few will ever forget your company name or address. Tons of vanity value here!
Camera.co.uk $15,000.00 Category-killer alert! One of the very best domains in the highly coveted and valuable co.uk extension. Product specific in a big beautiful industry with a wealth of advertisers and future prospects.
ThisDay.com $24,000.00 On ‘This Day in Domain History’, a savvy domainer purchased this huge entertainment domain and developed it into a steady moneymaker.
iUS.com $25,000.00 Another white squirrel-like rarity, a solid LLL combo that is not “”czf”" or “”t8q”" but brandable and memorable and competitively priced. Kind of name that gets lots of offers, never loses its value, stands out from the rest. Even more so with the recent growth in values of top-level “”i”" names.
Medicinas.com (medicines) $25,000.00 Spanish for ‘medicines’, This is another category-killer at a brilliant offering and at a time when the industry is in transition and its monetization (and audience) will grow again.
VoipService.com $30,000.00 Up and coming but already here - this is one of the single best domains in the swelling and thus competitive VOIP marketplace. Premium generic with a long healthy future ahead.
Coed.com $50,000.00 Great four-letter, one word domain that can apply to mainstream or adult or even products/services/education and personals or housing. College based services are easily marketed and highly profitable.
Saws.com $50,000.00 Another phenomenal category-killer. Before you scoff at ’saws’ think about all the saws from hand saws up to diamond, nail, electric, table, commercial, industrial and beyond - literally thousands of types and companies and future value. The SEO value here alone is worth it. But really, it’s a highly unique, product specific category killer - something else we never see at this quality, at this price range. Rare opportunity.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Given the location and the attendees of TRAFFIC Down Under, it is given that Domain Consultant would look for and add high-quality .com.au’s to the auction inventory - and an amazing collection it is, many with no reserve.

Aftermarket.com Auction Escrow Process

Domain CentralWe are pleased to announce the escrow for all domains sold at T.R.A.F.F.I.C New York 2008 were finalized last month. We are proud of the trust that both buyer and seller instilled in us to handle and transfer their assets in a timely and agreeable manner. By offering daily updates on status, we provided a clear and concise way for information to flow freely. We admit that we may have been over zealous in our efforts to keep everyone up to date, but we feel that it enhanced the openness of the flow of information for all involved.

For those wondering how the escrow process works, a few key points and features available at the customers Aftermarket.com Escrow control panel:
- Convenient ‘one stop’ access for all information related to sales and purchases via Aftermarket.com auctions.
- Friendly user interface providing information regarding: payment and transfer options, domain registrar information, lot transfer status and contact information.
- Complete sales information including: domain/lot name, sale price, disbursement/payment option are available to either buyer or seller.
- Personal follow up as needed to ensure any special requests from buyer or seller are handled.

Down Under Escrow Process

For the Aftermarket.com TRAFFIC Down Under auction, we are working with a local well known registrar, Domain Central. Domain Central, winner Australian 2007 Deloitte Tech Fast 50 award - ranked 2nd Fastest Internet Company in the Nation. A leading domain name registrar and web hosting provider, established in 2003, it entered the market as the first Australian registrar dedicated to delivering high quality domain name and web hosting services to customers at low prices.

Domain Central is assisting in the transferring of AU domains to ensure the AUDA policies are properly adhered. For full .AU policies, please visit the AUDA website . And to celebrate the first T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Down Under, Domain Central has kindly offered to wave the existing $125 Administrative fee for the domain ownership transfers.

The quick synopsis (3 STEPS) for selling and buying .AU domains:
1) Seller: Completes and signs Page 1 of the “Change of Registrant Application” as transferrer.
2) Buyer: Completes and signs Page 2 of the “Change of Registrant Application” as transferee.
3) Completed Application is FAX/POSTED to the registrar Domain Central.

Domain Central will hold the domain until funds are received and will then reset the license and transfer to the domain to the new registrant.

IMPORTANT: The buyer MUST meet existing .AU policy to hold the domain license. Specifically: Policy No: 2008-05: Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules for the Open 2LDs (2008-05) - Publication Date: 30/05/2008. The AUDA recently updated their domain monetization policy. If you are interested in purchasing a .AU domain, partnering with an existing entity with rights to holding a .AU license is definitely an good alternative or researching acquiring your own. There is great opportunity in the .AU space!

In addition, Australia has a Goods and Service Tax law that applies to the purchase and sale of domains names. If you are Australian resident or company that sells or purchases at the Aftermarket.com Auction or a purchasers of a .AU domain, 10% GST will be added to final sales price to comply with the law. I am not a tax lawyer nor do I play one on TV. If you are wondering if this applies to you, I suggest you seek tax advice.

Through out the escrow process for this or any Aftermarket.com auction, we understand more than most that all buyers and sellers have specific preferences that they prefer when acquiring or selling domains. We keep those preferences at the forefront of all of our action items during the escrow process. There will always be instances where the process flows more quickly for some domain transfers than others, but rest assured we will always go the extra mile to accommodate participants when able.

It is the participants that make the auctions a success and we will continue in our efforts as we move forward with additional live auctions.

The amount and quality of domain submissions for this auction are impressive. Based on previous success, Thought Convergence elected to work with the Domain Consultant team in this endeavor.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Once again Domain Consultant has joined with Aftermarket.com to offer an exclusive line of high-quality names for auction at the TRAFFIC Down Under conference on the Gold Coast and this time, there’s lots of chum in the water.

We’ve searched high and low to find the very best domains at competitive, even bargain, prices. This time we decided to focus on getting the window dressing AND the right pricing - based on big increases in submissions and inventory quality.

IE’s sluggish JavaScript engine pushes Firefox into the forefront for Web 2.0 apps

Firefox vs IEWe made a decision some time ago that our live auction platform would function on all major OS’s and browser platforms. Sure, building a Java applet or ActiveX component may have been the traditional approach, but you risk locking out potential buyers if their system doesn’t meet a narrow set of requirements. Even if their system supports it, people may choose not to participate in the auction rather than installing software they don’t trust on their machine. Fewer participants’ means good domains unsold as buyers were not “present” to bid.

The Aftermarket.com Auction system uses the browser as the application container, much like Gmail or other so-called “Web 2.0″ apps. Most people already have Adobe Flash installed and are using IE 6 or 7 or Firefox 2 or 3, so when the live auction page loads, participants are immediately immersed in the action. New bids start appearing in their browser in near real-time, engaging them in the auction and encouraging participation in much the same manner as an auctioneer builds energy in the room. That is one of the most compelling attributes of our platform, and why other companies are taking notice.

Of course, getting the system working in four different browser combination’s, on both PC’s and Mac’s, is anything but trivial. Nothing mangles the carefully constructed project plan like a good set of cross-browser compatibility issues. Suddenly, that feature pegged for 3 days has dragged into the 3rd week, and not by any fault of the dev team. Once tight, clean code devolves into absolute confusion as we are forced to introduce new code paths to work around bugs in IE without messing up Firefox.

Implementing a good JavaScript framework helped us eliminate about 85% of those problems when we built the latest version of our auction platform. Now we face a new challenge: the JavaScript engine in IE7 is terribly slow, and in IE6, it’s almost unusable.

As web apps become more sophisticated, the JavaScript engine in the browser is pushed beyond what it was ever designed for in the first place, such as form inputs. Now, with our platform, every bid sends the browser into a frenzy trying to update all the pieces of the UI while still letting the user interact with the page. Some browsers, like Firefox 3, handle this relatively well; others, like IE 6, grind to a near standstill. IE 7 is marginally better, but Firefox is still superior, especially considering the improvements to the JavaScript engine in the most recent version of Firefox .

You’ll note that one browser is conspicuously absent from this discussion: Google Chrome. The “risk management” side of my head has been telling me not to list it as an officially supported platform for the auction, largely because I don’t want yet another browser to test in. I was mostly a spectator during the last browser war between Netscape (aka Mosaic) and IE - now I’m right in the middle of the arena, and things look considerably different down here than they did in the stands! I’m also nervous about the stability of the Flash plug-in in Chrome, but both of those arguments are losing force by the day and I’m beginning to yield. Frankly, my team thinks I’m crazy not to put Chrome on the list - some of them have been using it during testing, and they say the comparison between JavaScript engines in IE6 and Chrome is like comparing the zero-to-60 times of a tricycle and a Ferrari.

Our recommendation, if you weren’t sure after all this, is use the latest version of Firefox when you bid at our Aftermarket.com Auction in Gold Coast, Australia. It’s simply that much better.

Down Under conference, scheduled to take place November 18-20, 2008 in Queensland, Australia. The Aftermarket.com auction will commence on November 20, 2008, beginning at 8:30 AM AEST UTC/GMT +10 hours (Nov 19, 2008, 2:30 PM PST). Those unable to join us Down Under may access and participate in the auction online at this time.

The domain submission period for this auction kicked off on Monday, October 6th. In addition to new domain submissions, all domains previously submitted but not sold at the New York Aftermarket.com auction will be considered for the upcoming Down Under auction. The final auction list will feature at least 25 .AU domains in addition to a minimum of 75 competitively-priced, top quality lots. As the Aftermarket.com auction in New York confirmed, competitively-priced domains get action and move! Our critical and rigorous selection process has proven highly effective - in New York, over 50% of our inventory sold, and of those sales, more than 75% sold above the reserve price. Based on that success, we will maintain the same criteria for the upcoming auction Down Under. This time around, however, we plan to list up to 50% of the inventory at No Reserve. Going Once, Going Twice, SOLD!

gavelWednesday, September 25, marked a new chapter in our history with the live auction held at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. 2008 Conference in New York. Everyone here was extremely excited about the results and it showed in the success of the completely new Auction Bidding Interface. As many of you already know we had to address several issues to make this a more worthwhile experience and feel that we were truly successful with Wednesday’s auction.

We offered 50 domain names. Although the actual dollars sold was not grand, the fact is more than 50% of the inventory was sold and of those over 75% sold for above their starting reserve. I believe in the methodology used in selecting these names and setting the reserves. There are improvements to be made in the actual process, I recognize. We will continue to make those remaining names available on the site until October 1, 2008. We monitored online feedback during the auction as many were following the action closely on various sites with real time, live chats and we found that most of the comments were positive and clearly showed we have made great strides with the format and listened to our users feedback. One of our bidders who purchased one of the more prominent domain names let us know that he was,”very impressed with online auction interface. Well done.

The recently improved auction format allowed those with a stake in the domain market to easily bid and monitor lots specifically interested in. Other than an issue with a specific computer dropping its network connection on the stage, the system tracked well with the in-house and online activity. This new platform was extensively tested to ensure a stable environment for the live auction. A few features we wanted to roll out were put on hold for the next version. After the success of this launch, we are very excited about putting the other features back in and making improvements on existing system.

Hopefully many of you were able to watch the streaming live auction featuring the award winning auctioneer Jill Doherty, while following the actual ‘lot’ being bid on in the Auctioneer Pane. As a licensed and practicing NYC auctioneer, the auction teams style is influenced by the big auction houses here, Sotheby’s and Christies, which was a nice change of pace.

What is a proxy bid?
All Aftermarket.com auctions use a proxy bidding system to make bidding easy, automatic, and safe - letting you enter the maximum amount you’re willing to pay for a lot and then put it on cruise control. Once you’ve entered your maximum price, we’ll raise your actual bid automatically by the lot’s set bid increment each time another bidder outbids you. We’ll continue to maintain your status as high bidder until the bidding exceeds your maximum.

Once bidding does exceed your maximum, we’ll message you through the bidding interface to let you know that another bidder has taken the lead and to give you the opportunity to raise your maximum. Don’t worry, your maximum bid will never be visible to sellers or other bidders.

Example:
—Auction Lot Title: Domain1.com
—Starting Reserve Price: $100
—Bidding Increment: $25
—You open bidding with a proxy bid of $500.
1. If there are no other bidders, you win this lot and pay a price of $100.
2. User B counters your bid with a bid of $200. The bid system will automatically raise your actual bid to $225 (last high bid + bidding increment). This counter bidding will continue automatically until you either win the bidding, or bidding exceeds your proxy bid (at which point you would be notified and given the opportunity to raise your proxy bid).

Can I cancel a bid?
No, you cannot cancel a bid. Per the Auction Terms & Conditions Agreement, all bids are final and binding.

DomainConsultant Explains its Auction Selections

There is little question in our mind that if you are looking for super premiums over $100,000, you are well covered by the other auctions. They always do it well, kudos to them.

If you are looking for domains with multiple venues of value in lower price ranges, we hope you’ll take a few moments to review and, hopefully, understand our selection process and purchase recommendations.

All about ‘Value’

Very early on in the process we decided against ‘window dressing’ - knowing full well our list would be viewed as being sub-par upon first glance. But as we publicly stated before, we concluded that, as consultants, our job is to pinpoint “value” for our clients.

Potential ‘value’ is defined and categorized as Short-Term (traffic/revenue), Long-Term (end-user sale/development), SEO value (growing importance), Price value (below/at market), Perceived value (first impression/credibility), Generic value, Industry value (size, scope and scale of applicable industries).

The following fifty or so domains were chosen because we identified a minimum of THREE of these specified values in our research and selection procedures.

For instance, a domain like ‘Dabbler.com’ has price, long-term, perceived and generic value. It could be a game or movie or book, software program or design company. A fun single word name like this, at this price, has a profitable end-user sale in its future - the buyer pool is potentially anyone.

A name like ‘OfficeComplex.com’ has long-term value, generic, industry, SEO and price value. We would also deem this name a ‘generic-Geo‘ meaning that ads are LOCAL, exponentially increasing the number of potential advertisers regionally.

For instance, search for ’seafood restaurants’ and the results will likely be tailored to your geography. Same is true of officecomplex.com and banquethall.com, businessgrant.com or even porch.net.

Pricing

Obviously pricing played a big factor in determining selections - in our case, it was based on the concept that we insure each offering retain ‘resale value’ in some form. Far too often, live auction domains are priced for the ‘end-user’ - giving the domainer little long term value out of their purchases. And ‘resale value’ is the closest thing to ’security’ domains can offer.

To that end, these domains were chosen because they retain the VITAL and undefined value of that knock or phone call we all wait for - from the end-user with deep pockets.

A Note on Our Notes

We added notes not to attempt to convince you to buy - we’ll leave that to the salesmen in the industry. No, these are reasons, internal reasons, for why we believe they deserve to be on the list which is based, in large part, on the ‘collective wisdom’ of many people who were subjected to a series of votes and negotiation until consensus was reached.

Truth is we’d bid on all of these given the money, time and opportunity. You can disagree with us and that’s fair but this is how we make our decisions, how we make our money. And surely we understand no auction could ever satisfy all but we hope you find real value somewhere on the list, as we did, and join us Live on Wednesday at 5pm EST to bid and buy and enjoy the extravaganza.
